The STEMNET web site defines a STEM Ambassador as 'an everyday person from a real working background who volunteers their time for free to act as an inspiring role model to young people'.

STEM Ambassadors help to stimulate the minds and imaginations of young people. They provide a refreshing change to regular lessons & activities for students & staff, bringing a fresh perspective to STEM subjects & careers.

Each Ambassador is registered, trained & CRB checked.

  STUART WOOD -  STEM AMBASSADOR  FOR SCIENCE

Stuart's science training has been applied in diverse settings; from academic research in narcotic pain relief to clinical research in the pharmaceutical industry. In parallel to this, he has been an active drummer & percussionist for more than 30 years. Although he holds a PhD, Stuart has a passion for making complex things easy to understand.

He left corporate business in 2007 & subsequently set-up Waywood Enterprises Limited, enabling him to combine his passions with his skills.

Stuart’s breadth of experience & his personal qualities ensure that his talks are stimulating, interactive & memorable. He is as comfortable working with children in Key Stage 1 as he is with A-level students.

Stuart can tailor his talks to different ages & abilities, though not all subjects are applicable to all ages.

Examples of talks Stuart has given include:

  Pain Transmission - How hitting our thumb becomes "Ouch!"
  Nervous Transmission - The basics of nervous communication (Year 10 upwards)
  How Our Nerves Talk - An introduction to nervous transmission (younger pupils)
  The Science of Percussion - Includes practical applications and noise!
  Transmission of Sound - Also includes practical applications and noise!
  Careers in the Medicines Industry - There are more than you think!

PLEASE NOTE:  Stuart is only able to accept STEM Ambassador appointments within Leicestershire, Rutland, Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire at this time.

 FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE STEM AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME

AIM: To increase young people’s choice and chances through science, technology, engineering & mathematics.

The STEM Ambassadors programme is STEMNET’s flagship programme, relying on over 18,000 volunteers who offer their time and support free of charge to promote STEM subjects to young learners.  It is an invaluable and free resource for teachers, helping them deliver the STEM curriculum in fresh & innovative ways.

The programme aspires to make a real difference to the delivery of STEM subjects to young people.  Key objectives include making every school in the UK aware of the programme & providing over 27,000 STEM Ambassadors nationwide by 2011.

The STEM Ambassador programme is co-ordinated by STEMNET via organisations across the country to fulfil a brokerage role to schools through STEMPOINT contracts.  Through strong links with business organisations the brokerage service aims to ensure that all schools & colleges can offer their students programmes which support the curriculum & increase the quality & quantity of students moving into further STEM education, training & development.

STEMNET aim to be recognised as the leader in enabling all young people to achieve their potential in STEM by:

Enabling all young people, regardless of background, to understand the excitement & importance of science, technology, engineering & mathematics in their lives, & the career opportunities to which the STEM subjects can lead

Helping all schools & colleges across the UK understand the range of STEM Enhancement & Enrichment opportunities available to them & the benefits these can bring to everyone involved

Encouraging business, organisations & individuals wanting to support young people in STEM to target their efforts & resources in a way that will deliver the best results for them & young people.
